Description of Prey

Description from the publisher:

Tommy is a Cherokee garage mechanic who denies his past and is uncertain about his future. His world comes to a halt when he and his people are abducted to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth. Tommy taps his latent Cherokee spiritual powers to save himself, his girlfriend, and the planet.

Prey is a first-person shooter in which players enter a living spaceship which enslaves alien races and devours humans for lunch. Built on a heavily modded version of the Doom 3 engine, features include wall walking, gravity flipping, and intense single- and multi-player gameplay.

How to play Prey Windows

The game version 1.4 has been tested on Windows 7 64-bit and Windows 10, works okay. Version 1.4 doesn't have DRM protection so you can play without the disc. The game supports super-wide and ultra-high resolutions up to 4K, check WSGF page. You may encounter some issues while playing, check our Notes

Install & play guide:

  • Mount the disc image of DVD/CD1. You will need the utility for mounting disc image files, like WinCDEmu, UltraISO, Alcohol 52%/Alcohol 120% or Daemon Tools Lite
  • Launch the installation (if autorun doesn't work - simply launch the installation from Setup.exe inside the disc). If installer shows -5009 : 0x8000ffff error - open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and find process issch.exe, close that process and restart the installation of Prey. If it didn't work - go to C:/Program Files/Common Files/InstallShield and move or temporary delete InstallShield folder (after you installed Prey - return it back); if you don't see such folder - you'll need to show hidden/system files (by clicking through "Tools->Folder Options->View" and then disabling "Hide protected operating system files")
  • For CD version: when the installation process will ask for CD2 - mount the disc image of CD2. Do the same when the installation process will ask to enter next disc. CD2 and CD3 must be mounted in same virtual drive as CD1, so first un-mount disc image of CD1 and then mount the disc image of CD2. In example, if CD1 was in virtual drive G:, CD2 and CD3 must be mounted in virtual drive G: as well
  • Also it is recommended to install DirectX 9 from the disc (if you're using Windows 10 - enable DirectPlay, read this or this guide how to do it)
  • Finish the installation
  • After you installed the game - install all the patches
  • (Patch 1.4 removes DRM protection, so the game version 1.4 can be played without the disc)
  • Open the directory with the game and find Prey.exe. Right click on Prey.exe - Properties - Compatibility - Set "Run this app in compatibility mode with Windows XP" and "Run as administrator"
  • Launch the game and play. If the game doesn't work - try to launch the game, then open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del by default) and check for processes Prey.exe and rundll32.exe. Close Prey.exe but don't touch rundll32.exe (it's a Windows app for running old apps from 32-bit operational systems, most old games running through rundll32.exe). Now try to launch the game again, it must work. Don't forget to close rundll32.exe process in Task Manager after finishing playing

Notes:

  • If the installation doesn't start - try to launch Setup.exe in compatibility mode with old version of Windows (98, 2000 or XP)
  • If the installer shows -5009 : 0x8000ffff error - open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and find process issch.exe, close that process and restart the installation of Prey. If it didn't work - go to C:/Program Files/Common Files/InstallShield and move or temporary delete InstallShield folder (after you installed Prey - return it back); if you don't see such folder - you'll need to show hidden/system files (by clicking through "Tools->Folder Options->View" and then disabling "Hide protected operating system files"). Check this thread for more details
  • If the installer says that serial key is invalid - disconnect the Internet connection and restart the installation, it must work
  • Patches include new content, like multiplayer maps, so make sure to install all of them. The game was using SecuROM DRM protection, the patch version 1.4 removes that protection, so the game version 1.4 is playable without the disc
  • The last patch for Russian version is patch 1.3, if you install international patch 1.4 on Russian version, the game menu will change to English. The Russian version of the game with patch 1.3 works without the disc
  • If your game is stuttering or works slowly - rename Prey.exe to CoDSP.exe (usually stuttering happens on AMD graphics cards, that method resolves that problem)
  • Also, it may happen because of V-sync enabled, you can disable V-sync by editing config-file, read this guide how to do it. But be careful - this also removes the in-game FPS cap (60-62 FPS) which may cause the game physics to go out of sync
  • The game supports super-wide and ultra-high resolutions up to 4K, but not all of resolutions are available in game settings. However, you can set any resolution manually by editing config-file. Go to Prey/base directory, open preyconfig.cfg and change seta r_customHeight "486" and seta r_customWidth "720" to your desired resolution; change seta r_mode to "-1" and change seta r_aspectRatio to your aspect ratio: "0" is 4:3, "1" is 16:9 and "2" is 16:10. Check WSGF page for more details
  • Also, the game supports 8x and 16x anti-aliasing but you need it to enable in same preyconfig.cfg file. Open preyconfig.cfg and seta r_multiSamples to "8" or "16"
  • The game does not properly recognize the available VRAM on modern graphics cards, and as such forces the game to use lower image quality settings. You can force high image quality manually. Go to Prey/base directory, create autoexec.cfg, open it with Notepad and add next lines:
seta com_machineSpec "3"
seta com_videoRam "2048"
seta r_shadows "1"
seta r_skipSky "0"
seta r_skipBump "0"
seta r_skipSpecular "0"
seta r_skipNewAmbient "0"
seta image_ignoreHighQuality "0"
seta image_downSize "0"
seta image_downSizeBump "0"
seta image_downSizeSpecular "0"
seta image_useCache "0"
seta image_useCompression "0"
seta image_useNormalCompression "0"
seta image_usePrecompressedTextures "0"
seta image_lodbias "-1"
seta image_filter "GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR"
seta g_brassTime "2"

Save it and launch the game, now all graphics settings must be on high. If the game started working slow with new settings - delete autoexec.cfg

  • The game supports EAX Surround Sound technology which doesn't work on Windows 10 by default. To enable Surround Sound put OpenAL32.dll (available in Downloads) next to Prey.exe, then launch the game and go to Options -> Audio, select "OpenAL" as Sound System, set Sound Device to "OpenAL Soft" (should already be set) and enable EAX if desired. Check PCGamingWiki for more details
  • As alternative - you can enable EAX Surround Sound with Creative ALchemy utility, read this guide
  • The retail Multi-5 version has English dubbing and texts (menu, subtitles) for 5 languages: English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. You can change the language of in-game text by editing preyconfig.cfg in Prey/base folder. Open preyconfig.cfg with Notepad and change the value of seta sys_lang "english" to your corresponding language
  • If you don't know or don't want to bother with all that fixes and edits of config-files - you can simply install repack by MagiPack(also mirrored on this page), it has all required fixes and was tested for working on Windows 10
  • Don't forget to check PCGamingWiki page if you have troubles, it is very useful!

Madman 2023-12-24 3 points Windows version

I finally got high resolutions working! For me the issue is that I had to set the game exe in compatibility mode, "Override high DPI scaling behavior. Scaling performed by: Application" now the menu works and I can start the game.

Madman 2023-12-24 0 point Windows version

OK, so I can get the game to run fine at 720p, but nothing I try will get it to work at 1080p....

Madman 2023-12-24 1 point Windows version

I have installed the game and can get the main menu to launch, but it always launches with the wrong resolution with the screen stretched and is unusable. I have tried all the resolution edits to the ini files, etc nothing changes it. Also my mouse and keyboard stop responding when the game menus is up. All i can do is alt enter then alt tab to then close it.

Im on WIndows 10, using compatibility for WinXP, running as Admin, etc.

Prey Doom 3

The unique weapons, environments, characters, and set pieces really hold up and the gameplay is just as engaging as it was in 06. Such a shame Bethesda decided it wasn't worth it to continue this series.

Pytor 2023-08-20 1 point Windows version

The MagiPack Repack works with the PreyVR port. It is a little disorienting to play with the portals and gravity shifts but it is immersive and exhilarating.

I just finished Prey. Thank you so much for the upload, this was exactly the type of game I was looking for!

CLB1966 2023-05-11 7 points

Thank you for digging up that soundtrack element... I should point out, however, that it is only a PARTIAL soundtrack. The real thing is 2 CDs, while this was only the first CD.

Fortunately, I've found the actual original recordings for this... and am providing them to this website in three formats (128mbps "standard" MP3, 320mbps "super high quality" MP3, and FLAC (which is pretty much "original recording quality" in this case). I'm also providing the original cover art, original web page documents. All in a nice, if fairly large, RAR-compressed file. For serious fans of the game, I hope you'll appreciate this as much as I do (having done the legwork myself, for my own purposes, but wanting to share it!)

@CLB1966 got you covered, the original soundtrack from the defunct directsong website is now available here

CLB1966 2023-02-04 0 point

One last note... I saw at least one poster below, with a physical copy, who was unable to find the CD key for his personal copy. I remember going through that myself, when I first bought the game.

It's inside of your user manual. Not on the outside rear cover, as is so often the case. and definitely not on your CD case.

If memory serves... and I copied my code down on a TXT file and haven't looked at my physical manual since... it was on the inside rear cover. Or maybe on the first page, just underneath the front cover? (One game I own did that, as I recall, but I don't THINK it was Prey.)

Every time I get a game, or any software for that matter, which uses a key, I copy that key down in at lesat two other places. Usually, I scan the place where it was originally found (this is my favorite approach for CD keys printed on CD jackets, or rear covers of manuals). I also create a text file with it as plain-text... able to be copy-and-pasted right into the field during installation/reinstallation. Of course, I keep a big repository of ino and software for every program I own. I originally did this on an internal hard disk, then moved to an external one connected to my router, and now I use a Synology NAS with 5x 12TB drives in a RAID array (for 48TB of storage plus full protection if any single disk fails). And over half of that storage is just my software archive. With a notable, if not "large," portion of the contents including items found here. In fact, even for games I own, I still capture the web pages and files, unless they're identical to items I already have.

"My Abandonware" is a tremendous resource, folks. And not merely for people who've never had a chance to try out old software items, but also for those of us who may own our own copies, but want to keep digital versions as well, or try out different variations, or so on.

For instance, I never knew I could use my CD key for this game to get it on Steam... and I just did that a few moments ago!

CLB1966 2023-02-03 0 point

By the way... if ANYONE has the soundtrack... which was provided for download from a now-defunct service for free if you bought the "deluxe" version... I think that would be a tremendous addition here as well, though it's not "standard" for this site to provide that sort of thing.

Prey's soundtrack was on 2x CDs, and was available as physical disk or as download (the free version was only digital, of course).

It was pretty widely touted at the time... the music in this game is terrific. But, look as I might, I can't find it ANYWHERE at this point.

CLB1966 2023-02-02 0 point

This is one of my all-time favorite games. It really upset me when the company which made it (and planned a sequel) got "cancelled" and then, a few years later, the company which had bought the IP from that defunct company decided to re-use the name on a totally unrelated (and to ME, much less enjoyable!) game.

This game drew me in from the very first scene... in the restroom of the bar my (in-game) girlfriend owned and ran. The "abduction" was incredible, and every last bit from then on kept me wanting to play on, and on, and on. It took some effort to put it away to go to bed while playing it.

It's a masterpiece, in my opinion. Nothing current out compares.

It's build on a modified version of the Doom 3 Engine, I believe. It had the same "wet and shiny" effects that game used so much, as well, but to me, to much greater effect. The stuff in D3 was just "horror movie gore" and worked well in context, but the organic nature of what you're dealing with in this game was just all the more horrifying once you understand what you're really dealing with.

Some reviews mention the "gravity switching" features as just gimmicks, but I disagree. It felt believable to me... why would gravity on a space vessel always have to be oriented in the same direction? Why NOT switch it at will, or even have different gravity orientations within a single room, if it's "gravity plate" technology rather than "real" gravity?

The ending was still really pretty satisfying, all things considered, but I was REALLY looking forward to the planned sequel, and still hope that someday, someone will make that planned sequel (even if it can no longer be called "Prey II" as originally planned).

In the meantime... given that the owner of the IP has done everything in their power to pretend that this game "never existed" (so as not to distract from their newer "Prey" game)... I encourage everyone interested in immersive sci-fi "action movie with you as the star" gameplay to pick this up. It really is one of my top-ten favorites of all time... just behind the first two "Thief" games and the Half-Life (and Portal) games.

Get it. You won't be sorry!

Michael F 2022-08-10 1 point

Classic game, runs great on Win 10. Basically, if Half-Life and Portal had a baby, it'd be this game. Love the storyline built around Cherokee experience. Really great native American sci-fi, and excellent world-building. It's very linear, and the puzzles are simplistic, but the gravity walls and portals are a fun mechanic.

Michael F 2022-07-29 0 point

Fabulous game, the graphics look so good. It's basically Half-Life crossed with Portal, with a cool indigenous culture story to anchor the wild sci-fi. Super fun!

Wow I didn't expect this game to be abandonware. I looked for it on Steam and GOG and wondered why I can't buy it there. andrew 2021-08-03 0 point

yeah, while I have an infinitely greater affinity for the classic installment and still get pretty stoked when I watch that first launch trailer or hype tailer...

"I came here, only to kill you!" and yes I am not an FPS type player much at all. I will play half life / 2, I love the original FEAR, I think the new doom games are some of the few fps i've enjoyed in quite some but now im thoroughly away from my point,

I think this game is sick and should be recognized and able to be purchased it. It feels like some nice middle ground between doom 3 and hl2 to me as a relatively "casual" consumer of the genre and generally just play arcade games ANd fighting games interspersed with the few interesting new games like Control.

Again i've derailed myself , I thought the hour or so i played of the new prey seemed rather impressive though again I like this game far more but I guess it just sucks it almost is being forcibly turned into a villian, and I guess in some ways rightfully so but at no fault of it;s own or dev but greedy shitty publisher I assume?

anywho "i want those bastards dead, all of them! I want vengeance"

The DLL extraction thing was flashing red on top of the window but what it says in the output right before it was this:

could not create destination file

anyone know?

GLVokes 2021-04-28 0 point

Just amazing as i expected. The Id4 engine was an amazing engine with the first taste of next gen, back when it has been used the first time in Doom 3. Now it surely looks pretty outdated, obviously, but it still looks clean AF nowadays.
Not to mention those little gimmicks created for this game, from those "zero gravity" -like sessions and gunplay to those portals sending you to another place in real time - see? it's a cool concept design now, but then it was an absolute novelty.
Not a really long game (on normal difficulty it tokk approx. 7 hours), not that punishing (obviously on normal difficulty) and with a roster of only 6/7 weapons, but damn, it convinced me to buy it for Steam.
10/10, it must return officially on Steam asap.

Raven 2021-04-18 0 point

Amazing and underrated gem! A must-play if you're into FPS games. If you want to have it on your Steam library you can get a cheap cd-key from sites like Gamivo, Eneba... (1-3$).

BurgBoogBoi 2021-03-01 1 point

Amazing game. The story is AWESOME!!!
10 out of fricking 10, bruh.
In the story, your protagonist is an amazing Cherokee who kills aliens after getting abducted.
Another awesome thing is that I'm like half Cherokee.

The Lei 2021-02-27 0 point

The game is still better than HL3.
Joke aside, it is damn good, inventive and impressive!
Portal? Nah, that is just jumping through portals to open doors and activate giant red buttons.
But Prey, Prey is a total different thing. Traveling through portals in mind-bending ways.
Also this game has a LOT of unique rooms and assets.
The story is also a good one.
Sadly, Bethesda is trying to erase it. Now the original Prey is "sold out" digitally. However that could happen. Have they run out of bandwidth for it or what?
and it got replaced with fake-prey. That shameless cash-in on the name.
The original sequel will never arrive...
So get this game and enjoy a really unique piece of art!

I think one might be better off downloading the RG Mechanics Repack of the game which is not only compressed at around 1GB also but comes pre-patched and everything. Working absolutely fine on Windows 10 and no viruses whatsoever.
Just install and hit play.

Bux 2020-11-24 0 point

Classic me, complains about something and literally 2 minutes later finds the solution. For anyone wondering you simply have to go to the file DVD Drive (H:) Prey_Disc2, right click on the top of the file. Then, click copy address and paste it into the pop up asking you for the file. Hope you understood what I meant by that (I'm not the best at explaining things) but if you did get what I mean then I hope it helped.

Bux 2020-11-24 1 point

If you have low spec or integrated GPU (with the exception of gaming laptops) don't bother you will stuggle to hit a decent FPS on low to medium settings.

So every time I try to launch the Setup.exe it pops up that InstallShield Wizard is starting and then that disappears and nothing else happens.

cant launch the iso without getting crashes
" setup has stopped working"

Cre0 2020-09-02 75 points

1 Download both the game and the patch
2 Unzip in a location of your choice
3 In main game file, find 3 disk files. open number 1
4 find Setup.exe and proceed with the installation.
5 Enter CD key
SHT7-CADJ-PGSH-2TRA-E6
ignore errors if any
6 Start installation, and open disks 2 and 3 from the original file
7 When prompted, navigate to your computer disks F: G: or whatever the new additions 2&3 are named.
8 When main installation is finished, unzip the patch and run the .exe file. Install following instructions.
9 When istallation is finished, you should right-click the desktop shortcut and Run as Administrator. otherwise game will spit out an error.
10 Game will glitch around your monitor a bit before successfully running. A PREY menu screen will show when installed correctly.

Instructions courtesy of Flying Bugs, The Corgi and other brilliant people in the comments. Enjoy this gory masterpiece!

Jug 2020-07-01 0 point

Disregard my comment about a brightness/gamma issue. It was my own fault. Fixed it. Great game!

jug 2020-06-30 0 point

The only issue I'm having is retaining my video brightness/gamma setting. Other than that it's great. It resets itself after exiting and restarting. Something I'm doing wrong or is it the game?

jug 2020-06-29 0 point

This actually work? Full version?

%0 %0 2020-05-05 0 point

ISO contains disc 2 and 3. Running either ISO says "please insert disc 1". Awesome.

Thanks so much guys. I am in a nostalgic mood :)

Prey is a solid masterpiece.
Period.
Using the same engine of Doom 3, but in a more trippy way, using portals,upside-down sequencies, and other fuckeries that you won't believe if you didn't see them first! 10 out of fucking 10, IGN could confirm

Pulse 2019-10-23 2 points

Thankyou so much for making this game available, I couldn't find it anywhere else. I'm really enjoying it so far, amazing atmosphere and very trippy :)

It was easy to get working, I just needed to get a cdkey which was simple and needed help getting a higher resolution but again, simple.

Absolute classic. One of the greats. You can use both Sikkmod as well as ReShade to further improve the graphics:

So yeah, just download the original file, unzip it.

Then download the patch and unzip it.

Then install the game from clicking on the unzipped patch file and it should work.

GetOutAlive 2019-03-21 3 points

When you run the executable, you will probably get a bluescreen error message saying, "DLL extraction to fs_savepath failed". To fix this, right-click on the executable and click "Run as Administrator".

The Corgi 2019-02-23 20 points

@RIDIX

1. Download the game (1.6 GB) and the patch (42 MB)
2. Mount the ISO and install the game.
3. When prompted enter CD key. Ignore the error.
4. After the game is installed run the patch.
5. Play

ridix 2019-02-16 -3 points

how do i install this. it always says setup.exe error while launch? happens on every prey setup i downloaded

Canned_Venison 2019-02-05 17 points

DAMN, I was not expecting this game to blow me away like it did.

The visuals, atmosphere, and the MUSIC. My god, the music is incredible... just... the sound design in this game is something else.

Anyway for anyone wondering the cd key and the patch below work 100%. Try it out!

Rob 2019-01-30 10 points

Absolutely must-play FPS!

@CLOWNSLAY There is a patch in the link below, under "Game Extras". It lets the game run without the CD

Clownslay 2019-01-15 3 points

When I try to run it with the disk mounted, it says "Original disc could not be found or authenticated."

I really liked this one, the whole abduction scene was chilling af. Also all the aliens' gory technology.
The portal mechanic was jaw-dropping at the time, preceding Valve's Portal game.
Also, I am still secretly waiting for a proper sequel with protagonist Tommy. FeelSadMan.
