HeroQuest
DOS - 1991
Also available on: Acorn 32-bit - Amiga - Amstrad CPC - Commodore 64 - ZX Spectrum
Description of HeroQuest
A great PC version of the equally underrated board game of the same name from Games Workshop, Hero Quest is an isometric tabletop strategy/RPG game that simplifies RPG statistics without simplifying gameplay.
As in the board game, up to 5 players can play the game as wizard, elf, barbarian or dwarf in a quest to banish the evil wizard. Secret doors, traps and treasure abound in this turn-based, mission-based game. Good game in every respect and severely underrated.
Those who like this game should also try Space Crusade another Games Workshop boardgame conversion based on the much-improved version of the game engine.

The Italian version has a bug, as soon as you try to load or save the game crashes (freezes in a wrong opcode loop). The bug was present also in the original version.
@FEX, I've fixed it when working on the translation, see the forum for more info:

the italian original translation was beyond poor...

@FEX, About the savegame problem, afflicts the italian version only, it's an originbal bug!
Circa il problema del salvataggio, affligge solo la versione italiana ed è un bug originale!
Sul forum di oldgamesitalia si potrà scaricare a breve la versione fixata e completamente tradotta.

@cannonfodder, I experienced a similar problem. The fix is to load different graphic card (either s3 or tseng, each has several series). Dosbox-x has a collection of them. Use the one that works for your game.

I had the board game so I just had to get this game as soon as it was released. The graphics I wasn't too keen on and in fact I didn't enjoy the computer game as much as the board game.

When i try to save my character, the game ask me to put a floppy in, i have no floppy at all.... obviously! then i have to click on "OK", it's the only available option, and the game get frozen and it does not save anything at. i have to reboot everything.
Any idea?
Thanks

Hi I got an old Risc PC up and running with Internet. Downloaded the Risc OS version but it appears to be a data file when opened on the Risc PC. Could somebody help me load this game?

Easiest way to play (and this goes for most Dos games)
1.Download and install Dosbox and open the installed folder
2.Open the dosbox.conf file and copy/paste the text below at at the very bottom
@echo off
mount C C:\HQ
C:
HERO.EXE
exit
2.Dload this game/extract/and rename just the folder with all the files in it (hero-quest) to HQ and copy/paste the whole folder to C:\
3.Start the game with the desktop shortcut or make one using Dosbox.exe
Note:Keep the dosbox.conf file you added text too.For each new game you want to play, simply name your game folder to something short and put that where HQ is in the text and find the game file (.exe / .bat or whatever) and put that where it says HERO.EXE in the text. And lastly don't forget to copy the games folder to C:\

A good game, funny how the music that plays is the opening intro to "Golden Brown" by the Stranglers. (Anybody whose ever seen Snatch knows this song.) I was surprised to find it in a game. I had the board game as a kid but never got to play it, this game makes up for it, it's decent.

I loved this game when I was a kid. Still have the original board game and three other expansion packs; all with the original pieces and all in mint condition! Saw on-line this could all see close to a $1,000, who knew lol.
Just waiting for my kids to grow up so we can play. In the mean time I did find four friends to play it with and we all love it again and we're in our thirty's lol.

I still have this table top game. I have one of the expansions and I still have all the pieces too. Too bad no one wants to play. =(
Jhouse 2014-04-14 0 point DOS version
You should not have lost any of the pieces. I didn't want to collect it, I just wanted to play it. Thought, I'll just pick one up on ebay or something. OVER $300.00. Uh... Just wanted to play. Not that bad. Maybe I can get this to work, and it will satisfy my urges.

Apparently this game is based on the Warhammer universe, according to Wikipedia.

I use to play the board game when I was a teenager and I loved it. Unfortunately, my brothers thought it was boring.
Now, I lost all the pieces to the game, but I am glad to see that there is a pc version I was not aware of.
