Description of SimCity
In 1990, Maxis made the first and legendary Simcity, a city construction simulator. Starting in 1900, no buildings exists and you have to create road, create industrial and residential zones, school, police stations and much more to make you city grow.
Sometime you have to face natural disasters like a twister or a flood. In the free mode no goal is set, so the victory or the defeat does not exist.
You may also play a scenario where you have a limited number of year to change the city. Several problems exist : high criminality, traffic jams, nuclear disaster or very high unemployment.
The game was a big it and a lot of Sim games followed later on, though the second opus, sim city 2000, is seen as one of the best.
SimCity has the following addons available: Sim City: Terrain Editor, SimCity Graphics Set 1: Ancient Cities, SimCity Classic Graphics and SimCity Graphics Set 2: Future Cities, don't miss them!

For anyone who needs help getting the dos version running on windows, you first need dosbox, after its installed download the game and make a folder in C:\ and call it "DosGames" or something along those lines, next you'll wanna extract simscity to the new folder, id suggest renaming the folder to just simscity, then after that open dosbox and type "mount c c:\DosGames\SimCity then type "c:" then "SimCity.exe" the game should then run

This game is running under Win11 64-bit using OTVDM (https://github.com/otya128/winevdm), you only have to copy RTMTOOLS.DLL from Windows 3.x folder in the archive to SIMCITYW game folder. Sound is working too, but no MIDI music.

@WHATDOTHLIFE Well, I run Windows 3.11 under DosBox, so you might try it that way. Unfortunately, though, running Windows that way means there's no sound because the old drivers won't drive my modern sound card, and the video drivers don't work either as it's only in 16 color mode.

Anyone know how to get the Windows 3.x version to run in Win10? All I see is a lot of people commenting who never discovered there is literally every new edition of SimCity ever made on here as they all seemed to have downloaded the original version only. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it!

Sim City was one of the earliest games of its genre. Programmed by Bill Wright, who played a large part In both Maxis and Electronic arts, It was the first of many similar and advanced games that were to come. Bill continued his success with similar games.
I hope our players will check out his other games - many available on Abandonware.
This online version plays perfectly - any problems, then please let me know!

Make the Game equal or a little better then Amiga, except the Sound:
Edit dosbox.conf:
fullscreen=true
fulldouble=true
fullresolution=0x0
output=opengl
pcspeaker=true
pcrate=44100
tandy=on
tandyrate=44100
Then start DosboxECE, mount your Gamedir (...or do it all in the Dosbox.conf like a man :)
In the DosShell open Settings.exe, let everything be with Enter until you can choose Graphics Detail, choose 256 Color with 320x200.
Go to Sound Section and choose Tandy, it's 3 Voice (better then 1 Voice PC Beeper).
Covox/Disney Channel is not recognized. Maybe some day.
exit/save Settings, Start Simcity.exe
and...
looks good
Cheers

The Covox was a device that went on the printer port to play wave sounds (Digitized sound) at a cost of cpu performance. Easy enough to make one and there's a good video about the whole thing, History etc here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=spOenlrSSOE
Don't know if DosBox supports it but I do know it supports the Disney sound source. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1YThKmV2dk )

I can not get the sound to work. The only options available are PC internal sound, or Convox which I have never heard of. None of which works. You can beef up the graphics, but still not as good as some other platforms. Of course it would be better if there was some sound.

If you have trouble getting the abandonware version to work, there are builds of the open-source branch Micropolis available.

The PC version does not even come close to the Amiga version. The graphics are so poor on the PC version it is hard for me to even get into it at all. I used to play this a lot on the Amiga, and still would if I had an Amiga computer. Too bad they do not make an Amiga simulator for the Mac. Not one that works anyway.

I tried the DOS version using Boxer. It is not near as good as the Amiga version. Graphics are poor in comparison. Too bad, I loved this game when I was young. The DOS version doesn't even interest me. I wonder how the PC even evolved to this point.

One of the games which i spend lots of time. Until today i knew the cheatcode FUND to get lots of money. I did it always at the beginning of the game, so that the following earthquakes couldn't damage anything :-)

I bought Sim City classic for Windows around 20 years ago and it was just like this except better audio. Haven't been able to play it for years until I found this version for DOS.

*REVIEW*
Internally I began to barter with myself, unlike the probable bartering on the streets of Buttville, mine was not with items of physicality. Can I resurrect this once fine city? And at what price? Could I come out the other side of what’s probably the most difficult scenario Sim City could throw at me? “Yes”, I leaned forward in my chair triumphantly and grabbed the mouse.
System – New Game – Are you sure? – Yes

To fix Bern, google "Simcity Bern.psn". The first result should be from cd.textfiles.com. Download bern.psn and drop it into sim city's folder.

...The Bern scenario was missing on a lot of the pirate group releases. This is probably where this copy came from. No biggie, as the sim is still 100% playable without it.

One of the rarest versions of Maxis' genre-defining SimCity series, Simcity Classic is a good Windows 3.1 version of the original game, ported by Azeroth.
The review on MobyGames says it all"The Good:The original SimCity is a classic, and this is but a translation of it to the Windows environment. The gameplay is familiar, system specs need not be powerful (unlike for the newer Sim installments), and gameplay is a bit smoother than on the standard DOS version. Building a city from scratch is fun, and allows a person to experience the joys of being a ruler. Build cities "organically" like London, or build your city according to a larger over-all plan, like Washington DC. The Bad:While the experience of playing SimCity is fun, the overall game is rather pointless. There is little to do once you find that happy middle ground of taxes and spending- wait for enough funds, tweak your city a bit, wait for some more funds. Some have said that to "win" you must lay out your city for mass public transit (with no roads) which strikes me as a lopsided statistical modelling job. Granted, Will Wright could mold the game in any fashion that he desired, but SimCity seems a weird place to trumpet one's own ideological utopian vision. The pre-planned scenarios aren't very fun- once a grasp of the basic concepts of the game are in hand, demolishing buildings to build police stations in hot spots or bulldozing districts to stop the spread of fire just feel like boring puzzle games. The use of windows in this game, while allowing more flexibility than the DOS version, can get unwieldy.
The Bottom Line:It started and defined a genre that no other series has ever been able to touch- city planning games. In retrospect, the game is a lot like Balance of Power: the ideas are awe-inspiring, and the execution creative, but the game itself leaves a bit to be desired. The fun in this version of SC is akin to the fun one gets with a paint program, not necessarily a game program. Future SC entries improve on this, and are worthy as game and social experiment... but this one is just a very well-done curio."
