despite getting Pitfall to work perfectly fine in PCem emulator running win 98SE, i wanted the authentic experience because as much as i enjoy the emulator, by the time im writing this the PCem emulator it's still pretty slow and choppy at times getting anything beyond Pentium II is a slide show for me. you need really a very fast and powerful pc to run it without issues. so i finally caved-in and build an actual retro pc, i originally wanted a pentium II 450mhz or Pentium III 650mhz motherboards to build, but these are hard to find and stupid expensive now days, so i went with the second best thing, a socket 478 Pentium 4 Motherboard from 2004. there much easier to find and less expensive than the others. Thankfully most of them support Win 98 (specifically the Second Edition) and run fantastic 95% of the time. The only real downside is the Pentium 4 is considered too new and fast for windows 98, but works fine. Anyway after getting all the drivers and OS working, including USB 2.0 support for storage so i can transfer files without a headache. then I finally got to play Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure and it does work and play perfectly fine, but after playing it in full screen in low-resolution in fast mode for more than an hour, when trying to exit the game it just goes to black with music just loops without end, and hangs my computer. I had to force restart it. i have no idea why this happens when I play in full screen mode. But in windowed mode its fine. I’m reminded how much of a pain it is to work with such an outdated OS like windows 98 back in the day. But it's still worth it and it's a good learning curve and now I’m more familiar with hiccups and how to avoid its pitfalls (no pun intended). I had the same issue with EWJ special edition and even Toy Story. My guess is since there very early Windows 95 games that open up in window mode, before you change the settings, don’t play very nice with much newer hardware/software.

I found a way to make Pitfall work for Windows 10 so I'll share it here.
I got it working by creating a PCem Win95 config and mounting a CD Rom image that I found searching online. Plays exactly like the original Windows version with music and effects, etc. Even made an Xbox controller work as a joystick. The nostalgia is incredible.

I LOVE THIS GAME!!!, huge fan of the Pitfall games (Pitfall II and mayan adventure are my favorites) a classic side-scroller with smooth framerate and fluid animation clearly inspired by Virgin Interactive/Disney's "Aladdin" and "The Jungle Book". i had this game way way back when i had my old win 95, sadly i was only 5 years old at the time and never able to finish it, and i move on i really wanted to play this game properly after all these years. from all the versions i checked and played: Sega CD is hands down the best console version, sega genesis comes very close, SNES is OK but a bit streched and washed out, The 32X version had potential, it's so close rivaling the genesis version but it's bogged down by the horrbile frame rate, The Atari Jaguar version is such let down, despite looking better then the 32X it's buggy, frame rate hickups and overall feels rushed, and the GBA version is down right garbage.
but PC-ROM is the definitive version!!! has the best of both worlds, enhanced graphics of the inferior 32X version, the CD quality audio of the Sega CD, and the exclusive levels from Sega CD/32X version and in smooth 60FPS.
sadly this game is almost impossible to run on modern hardware. you can play it (kind of) on win10, but you have to properties of the exe file change the windows compatibility to win95 or win 98/me and replace the outdated DLL files otherwise it will not work. the game itself is locked in windowed mode, no way of enlarging it or full screen and and there's no audio at all, there's a way to get it work manaully but it's such a such a hassle and not working very well. it's such a shame this is another case of a classic game that don't play nice on post 95/98 pcs. if there's a game that needs remaster very badly on PC it's definitely this one. since microsoft acquired activision (the IP holder) we may finally get that wish in the future :)

Windows game can work fine with CD music too on Windows 10+: see on Vogons forum (search for topics like 'Game will ONLY work with CD in drive', 'MCI cdaudio not repeating (looping) on modern Windows systems' etc.).
Looks like the only problem is no music loop while playing, unless you use some wrappers like dxwnd and rip audio to MP3/OGG

@JP @DDD THANK YOU for this! I've literally never been able to hear the sound effects actually work on a modern system.

running this game modern PC's is frustrating. ISO is broken and will not work no matter what I do!. the RIP version on the other-hand is playable but it has performance and sound issues. it runs in windowed mode but I still experienced some framerate dips, you can play with resolution and screen size but it sadly doesn't really fixes the problem.
the biggest problem the game currently has is the audio as there is non, not even sound-effects. there is a way around fixing the sound effects. if you change the Properties of PITFALL.EXE to windows 95 or 98/me, in the game settings you can enable the sound effects and it will work but it will crash the game due to outdated DLL file, there's replacement DLL file from a site "https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=32451&sid=be4e0e4d113dea309c141bf0c1c01f1a&start=20#p268314" just download it and replace old DLL file with the new one and the sound effects will work without crashing but it only works if the properties of this game is on windows 95 or 98/me, above that it will not work.
now the music is by the time I'm writing this borderline impossible, it needs to run directly from the CD (which is redbook audio and it wasn't implemented properly for post windows 95 PC's) currently it's impossible on Win 10 64x (unless you tweak you're computer to oblivion) to make the audio work with modern pc's.
'Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure' on windows needs to be restored properly to work modern PC and i hope Activision will finally get off their high horses give this IP to Steam or GOG already!
