Description of Dark Castle
MobyGames says it all:
Dark Castle is a platform game that relies more on timing and careful planning than quick reflexes and shooting things. It's clever--a thinking man's platformer. One thing that contributes to this is a completely 360 degree firing direction. When you throw a rock, you can rotate your arm to any angle. This takes time to learn effectively, but after about half an hour, it really helps knock out some enemies threatening to get you.
Fun, but frustrating :)

Well first it's a 8 bit game, so latest port were done because it's overall a good 8 bit game of the time, but just out of time on megadrive or CDI.
The command are difficult, but remember that joystick had one button or two, so i think it's pretty well done for that time, plus those old game most difficulty were most of the time this particularity in the controls...
there no much graphic sound or consistency, well again don't ask too much on 64kb ram for c64, or appleII.
I'm currently trying the Apple II gs one, i thinks it's certainly the best except the cdi version port, graphics are very good, digital sound, voice, animation of character, well just stunned for that computer range. difficulty is configurable notable point with a beginners mode just with unlimited live. Little differences in other mode Just put yourself in 1986, before judging it!

I remember my uncle had it on his very old Mac, I used to play this game for hours, great time but hard at times. sadly the ports are from mediocre to completely trash. The Commodore 64 version is the closest to the Mac version in my opinion, while the audio and graphics took a down grade it plays surprisingly well, not perfect but actually playable and beatable on C64, might be the only worthy port to 'dark castle'. The DOS version is probably the most disappointing port, no mouse support, the graphics are in CGA mode, the vomit colors of pink, white and blue and it will hurt your eyes after a while. the sound is only in ‘pc speaker’ mode which means it will hurt your ears as well, it's high pitch ear piercingly loud to the point I rather play it with no sound at all. the Amiga and Atari ST are slightly better when it comes to color and sound, but despite having mouse support, the controls are broken for these ports, you will spent more time fighting the controls then the enemies. The Sega genesis port is the absolute worst!!! As much as I hate the cdi version (at least on the cdi, the audio is not bad and graphics are fine), the genesis port will make you break you're genesis out of frustration, the input lag in the controller, repetitive music and sounds and the buffoonery of the protagonist is what broke me. The only version I recommend is the obvious original mac version. But if you're really want to try other ports then try the C64 version. the rest of the ports... STAY WAY!!!

Nice! Played this on my freshman dorm on my roommate's 1st generation Mac. Was the only person on the hall to finally topple the Dark Knight, and certainly put in the time to do it. Graphics not as good as I remember, but had lower expectations back then. F'ing bats!

I grew up with this and BDC on a mac plus my dad got from a coworker. This was pretty much my favorite game for years, and I still love it. The black and white graphics in this game on the original mac version are second to none, IMHO.
