Description of Guilty Gear X
Guilty Gear X is a very intriguing fighting game. It brings numerous new ideas to the genre, is the first high-resolution 2D fighting game ever produced, and is perhaps the best 2D fighter outside of SNK and Capcom’s games.
The first thing someone would notice are the images. Guilty Gear X’s visuals are simply stunning. It’s amazing what high resolution can achieve for hand-drawn images. The effects are fantastic, the backgrounds are lovely, and the characters are stunning. The only criticism I have about GGX’s looks is the animations. While they aren’t exactly missing, they don’t appear as good as they could be. Still, this is certainly one of the most visually appealing 2D games ever created.
As one can assume, the sound is nothing exceptional. With a few exceptions, the effects sound appropriate. The synth-guitar music is quite average, but it complements the game well. Then there’s gameplay. Guilty Gear X is truly unique. The new gameplay aspects offered are interesting and provide a welcome change of pace. First, merely moving forward allows you to build up your special gauge. While that is good, you will lose your gauge if you do not make an advance.
Next, there is the Roman Cancel. You can cancel the recovery of most attacks, even after collision detection, by pressing three buttons for half the cost of the special gauge. This can result in some crazy combinations. Of course, these aren’t the only distinguishing aspects of GGX; others include “Instant Block” (similar to Just Defending in Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves), “Faultless Defense,” and “Instant Kill”. Yes, you heard correctly. It is possible to kill your opponent with a single attack. Fortunately, these are usually only effective against the most ignorant opponents.
Overall, Guilty Gear X is a really great game. I wouldn’t say it beats Mark of the Wolves or Street Fighter 3: Third Strike, but it’s certainly worth a try, especially since good fighting games on PC are few and far between. Cyberfront Studios ported this unusual English PC version from the more widely known PlayStation version.
