A subgenre of strategy games 4X refers to four criteria such games must meet. 4X games must allow a player to explore, expand, exploit resources and exterminate their opponents. However, the final category, exterminate, cannot be the sole victory condition as victory is to be achieved through a combination of the four game elements.
